Single Point of Access (SPA) - Mental Health*

*If you contact the Single Point of Access after 8pm each weekday or at the weekend or on a bank holiday - please search for Intensive Home Based Treatment Team and leave a review there. Thank you. The Calderdale and Kirklees Single Point of Access team receives all referrals for mental health services in Calderdale and Kirklees. The team directs all the referrals to the most appropriate Trust services or advises the referrer of the best organisation to contact. The team screens all referrals for urgency i.e. whether they need a response within 4 hours, 24 hours or 14 days. They meet with people who have been screened to need a 4 or 24 hour response (urgent referral) face to face to assess their needs and also sees some people who need an assessment within 14 days. The single point of access team also provides a 24 hour, 7 day a week helpline for service users and can offer advice to referrers at any time. It also manages all inpatient ward beds in Kirklees and provides a gatekeeping service to assess whether people need to be admitted to hospital or can be nursed in their home environment. It does this along with its sister team, Kirklees intensive home based treatment.

Woman on phone was extremely rude. No help for person in crisis said what she had to say and ended the phone after being on the phone for 1 minute. Absolutely shocking from people who are supposed to help.

Terrible, sent round in circles

Terrible, I’ve tried calling multiple numbers & multiple options for operators then been sent round in circles passed from one to another. For urgent mental health issues this isn’t brilliant.

They have helped me find the support.

After a lot of hassle, bullying and problems with my home I was in total dispare I phoned SPA. They helped me and recommended an organisation. They have moved quickly to get support and see what needs to be done. But if it was not for Single Point of Access (SPA) I would be in hospital or worse. They gave me the information to move forward. The person who I talked to on the phone was kind, understanding and very helpful. I received a phone call from a nurse who was absolutely wonderful. They were all very good at what they were doing and I have only high praise for them. I now feel that I can slowly move forward and improve my life with the people they reffered me to. It will take time but I don't want to feel the out of control anxiety and depression. I don't want to be running away or taking my life. I don't want to be in a hospital. I do want to move forward and maybe get back to volunteering and maybe a proper job. They helped me so much. You can say that they were only doing the job that they were payed to do. But I have been with organisations that have not wanted to do that, just the opposite. So I want to pass on praise where it is due.

Very bad

Nightmare for getting hold of since I can’t use the phone, told me I can’t be autistic because I was having a “normal conversation” with them, interrupted every sentence I said and kept dismissing everything I said. Told me all they can do is get me to self refer to cbt, despite me telling them I’ve tried it multiple times before and it made things worse. Didn’t give me any support . Would never recommend. Now I have no support

Absolute shambles of a service!!!

If someone was in a mental health crisis, you would expect the service to respond in a timely manner. Well, over 7 days is just not good enough for not receiving the proper support that they required at the time.

Thank the lord that i have such a good counselor. Staff on phone have a job to do, but they are cold and rude - PWP workers are really nice (that's if they phone you back on time). Usually refer to IAPT which takes every opportunity to turn people away, so a useless service really.

Service advisor had 0 clue to help with the query. Generally just refer to cbt where people have major issues.

Long wait times, conflicting information

The service is not a equipped or does not want to deal with complex mental health problems. Instead, they refer to CBT and then leave a patient waiting in excess of 6 months. A referral was made from the GP on the 19th November 2021 for my brother and it was never followed up. He was discharged from the service without ever being seen.

I had a fone call told em I was suicidal n got told I was discharged when I waited 3 weeks for a phone call back. .

Every so often you strike gold during a crisis and get a worker who genuinely cares and tries to support you. I’m so grateful to those staff. The rest of the time, at best, you get someone completely clueless, undertrained, zero passion for their work or compassion for their patients. Even when you’re begging to be informally admitted, nothing. You’ve got to wait until you’re lying in a hospital bed after a more than pre-warned suicide attempt. Even then, you might still be fobbed off and sent home once you’ve physically recovered. The most likely outcome is that you’re simply ignored and left to your own devices. Promises to be called back are almost always broken.
