No local emergency dental care

August 12, 2024
My partner developed extreme toothache and at 6.30am on Sunday morning we called 111 to be told that there was no appointments anywhere across Yorkshire and Humber that could help him that day.

I called a 2nd time a few minutes later and the nearest appointment available was in Scunthorpe. We live in Meltham in Holmfirth.

I ended up driving my partner to Leeds where we paid £50 to see a private dentist who confirmed that he has an abscess under his back tooth.

We couldn’t afford for him to have the treatment there as he was quoted £500 so we visited a pharmacy and received advice on stronger over the counter dental care.

He’s now on the emergency cancellation list with our local dental practice where we are registered as paying NHS patients.

Appointments

Whenever I call the service to get an appointment they tell me to go to the website and I need to explain that I cannot because I cannot see. The website isn't suitable for people like me.

Not called back

June 30, 2022
My friend had a head injury so I rag 111 for advice. I spoke to an operator who asked me a lot of questions and was told I would receive a follow-up call that afternoon by a staff nurse to check in on my friend. That call never came. Luckily he was ok but for all they knew or cared he could have got a lot worse.

Empathetic call handler

October 22, 2020
I recently had a car crash and contacted 111 after my go advised. The lady I spoke to initially was really empathetic and supportive. The clinician however who then called me from this service didn't seem to have the same approach and she just told me to go to A&E.

Quick diagnosis and care

Pains in stomach, and wanted advice on what to do. Put through to doctors, and there was quite a long wait, but they did not hesitate to phone the ambulance for me. I was diagnosed with a bladder infection immediately.

The lady on the line realised my grand daughter was in distress and sent an ambulance immediately(10 minutes). 15 minutes later we were in the children's ward- fantastic service.

Pleasantly surprised

November 2, 2015
Over the last week, I have had toothache and really struggled to get an appointment with an NHS dentist because I wasn't registered. I was advised to call NHS 111, but I hadn't heard good things from other people. However, I did call and had a really positive experience. The person I spoke to was professional and friendly; they asked some set questions and said that I needed an urgent appointment with an urgent dentistry service, and that they would pass on my details to them for arrangements to be made. I was called back within a couple of hours, and was able to make an urgent appointment at the weekend. I was really impressed with the speed at which things happened and the help I received.

First time good experience

For the first time I can now give NHS 111 good feedback. I was helping a client look for a dentist and they called back within 10 minutes and offered a next day appointment
